Anafiotika Area of Athens: On the slope of the Acropolis

Built by stone masons from the Cyclades island of Anafi in the 1800's, when the law stated: "if you can build 4 walls and put a roof over it in 24 hours the land is yours", this charming historic area on the lower slopes of the Acropolis is steeped in tradition and its own unique ambiance. The new King imported these stone workers at his own expenses as they were rumored to be among the best masons in Greece

Today Anafiotika is worth millions too! It is a hilly and much like an Greek mountain Hora or defensive town. Confusing switch backs and whitewashed houses, terraced walkways and unexpected views. Click these photos below to see how pretty it can be in the spring. Basically Anafiotika is hugging the neck of the the Acropolis itself and very cool to walk along. Many people do so and its recommended if on foot!

Getting lost is half the fun and very tame. Wander properly... follow the signs and you'll egress the hipper route to the Acropolis via its north slope and avoid the 40 tour buses parked on its south side from dawn to dusk.

Acropolis Entrance fee is 12 euros full or 6 euro for the Acropolis only.
