They say many of the small stalls/stores you'll see in the Monastiraki area used to be, over 100 years ago, monks cells. Its a hectic, bustling scene with a lot to see and it can be charming if you are in the mood for crowds especially on Sunday mornings. And just because Monastiraki is a tourist area doesn't mean you shouldn't spend money there. All of Greece is a tourist area!
