North Central Greece

This area includes most of the huge plain of Thessaly on the southern end, where cotton, grains and tobacco are cultivated.
Lake Tavropou
This large reservoir west of Kardhitsa was formed by the damming of several valleys and is a rare nature site in that there are good facilities and information. Gradually the lake is attracting more birds, though there are already plenty of grebes, coot and cormorants. The forest around this lake are exceptional, however, with Greek and hybrid firs, various oaks, sweet chestnut,, and a fine variety of flowers on the woodland floor, birdlife. The lake is easily reached by road from Kardhitsa, and a good road follows the perimeter of the lake, with side roads going off in many directions into very wild areas.
