Greece Traditions: Oxi Day

learn about Greek cuisine

28 October Oxi Day or Greece said 'No' to Nazis's

This day is purely a patriotic national holiday, which commemorates the refusal of Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas on this date in 1940 to allow passage of Italian troops under Mussolini through Greece. Though Metaxas is widely believed to have uttered simply the word 'no' (Oxi, in Greek), he in fact responded to the request conveyed by the Italian foreign minister in the diplomatic language of the time, French, with the words 'C'est la guerre' (It's war!), with Greece entering into the war at this point. Though the Greeks succeeded in driving the Italian army from the mountains of Ipiros that winter, Hitler's armies invaded the following spring. Parades, folk dancing and speech making are the events of this holiday./
