Who's Who Ancient Greece: Chilon of Sparta

Chilon of Sparta - Pre-Socratic Philosophers and member of the 'Seven Sages' 6th C bc

chilon spartaThis sage was known for his reform of the strict Spartan Lycrugian' institutions, whereby power was given to the ephors (or assistants to the kings ) in his absence, or when they disgreed (there being two at the time).

He was also a poet who wrote a great number of elegiac verses. He was known for his laconic wit, and his belief in prudence, self-restraint, and careful judgment.

'Think before you speak', was one of his sayings, as well as 'Know thyself'. Laconia is the county in the Peloponnes where Sparta is. In English to be laconic means to be tight lipped.
